The Pool Has a Personality: How Different Pools Change the Way We Swim

Published on 29 July 2026

We often think of swimming as a simple relationship between a person and the water. However, the environment surrounding that water plays a much bigger role than many swimmers realise. Every pool has its own personality, created by its design, atmosphere, temperature, sounds, and surroundings. These factors can subtly influence how we move, how confident we feel, and how effectively we learn.

A quiet hotel pool offers a very different experience from a busy public leisure centre. The water may be the same, but the environment can completely change how a swimmer responds. A calm, peaceful pool with fewer distractions can help beginners feel more relaxed, particularly those who are building confidence in the water. With less background noise and fewer people nearby, swimmers can focus more easily on instructions, breathing patterns, and body movement.

In contrast, public swimming pools often have a more energetic atmosphere. Echoing voices, splashing, changing light conditions, and busy lanes can create a stimulating environment. For experienced swimmers, this may feel motivating and familiar. For newer swimmers, however, it can sometimes feel overwhelming and make concentration more difficult.

Pool design also affects how we swim. Competition pools are built for speed, with deeper water, lane markings, specific lighting, and features designed to reduce waves and resistance. These conditions allow swimmers to focus on performance. Leisure pools, with warmer temperatures, varying depths, and recreational features, create a more relaxed experience but may require swimmers to adapt their technique.

Temperature is another important factor. Warmer water can help swimmers feel comfortable and relaxed, which is particularly valuable when developing confidence. Cooler water can encourage a more energetic swimming style and may feel refreshing during longer sessions.

Outdoor water environments introduce another layer of complexity. Natural light, changing temperatures, currents, wind, and the movement of open water create a constantly changing experience that requires awareness and adaptability.

Understanding the impact of different environments helps explain why some swimmers thrive in one setting but struggle in another. The right pool is not just about the water itself. It is about creating conditions where swimmers feel comfortable, focused, and ready to progress.

At SwimExpert, choosing the right environment is an important part of helping every swimmer develop confidence and skills. A supportive setting allows swimmers to focus on learning, making progress, and enjoying their time in the water.

We had Oscar today as our usual teacher wasn’t here and he was amazing! So good with the kids and really helped push our daughter’s skills further than she has been in a super positive way. Thanks so much Oscar!

Hi, This is Anjali, here... I am delighted to say that Fern, my swim instructor was the most sweet, kind, gentle, patient and truly an amazing coach... I am so lucky to have found her, I commend her work and recommend swim expert to anyone who is a complete beginner, want to learn, or even brush up, I was someone who was especially reluctant but Fern made me feel so comfortable, I cannot put it into words, how much she helped me, I will recommend swim expert and Fern as coach, worth every penny!

We could not be happier with Chester as a swimming teacher for our 5 yr old daughter. She had really helped grow her confidence in the water.

Matthew has been absolutely amazing in helping our 7 year old with his confidence. His swimming has come on incredibly, he's swimming independently and loving it. Swimming is now something he enjoys and wants to do. I couldn't recommend Matthew at SwimExpert enough!

Couldn’t be happier with Chester’s teaching. Both our children have improved so much in such a short time and they really enjoy their lessons. Chester has a great rapport with them. She’s makes it fun, while also being really clear and not giving up until they get the technique just right. Would definitely recommend.
