At SwimExpert Swim School, we know how dedicated our swimmers are — whether you’re taking one-to-one swimming tuition, adult swimming lessons, or helping your child learn to swim. Every lesson feels valuable, but what should you do when you catch a cold? Should you attend your private swimming lesson or stay home to recover?
When deciding whether to swim with a cold, the first step is to listen to your body. If your symptoms are mild and “above the neck” — for example, a light sniffle or sore throat — a gentle swim might even help clear congestion.
However, if you’re suffering from “below the neck” symptoms such as a chesty cough, fever, muscle aches, or fatigue, it’s best to rest and recover. Swimming while ill can worsen symptoms and slow down your recovery, making it harder to get back to your best in the pool.
At SwimExpert Swim School, we take pool hygiene and swimmer health seriously. While chlorine helps disinfect the water, it doesn’t stop the spread of viruses through coughing, sneezing, or contact with shared surfaces.
If you’re feeling unwell, it’s thoughtful to skip your session and protect your instructor and other swimmers from germs. This is especially important in one-to-one swimming tuition, where you’ll be working closely with your coach.
Once you’ve been fever-free for 24 hours and your energy has returned, you can safely dive back into your private swimming lessons. Start slowly, focusing on technique and breathing. Your SwimExpert instructor can tailor your session to help you rebuild confidence and stamina at a comfortable pace.
Taking time off to recover is not a setback- it’s part of smart training. Resting now means you’ll return to your swimming lessons feeling stronger, healthier, and ready to make progress.
At SwimExpert Swim School, our expert coaches are here to help you improve your technique, fitness, and confidence – at your own pace, in your own lane.
