Seasonal Swimming: How to Prepare for Different Swimming Conditions

Seasonal Swimming: How to Prepare for Different Swimming Conditions

Published on 11 December 2024

Swimming is a fantastic year-round activity, but each season brings its own unique conditions. Whether you’re braving colder waters, enjoying a warm indoor pool in winter, or taking to outdoor settings in the summer, preparing for these changes can make your swim safer, more comfortable, and enjoyable. Here’s how to adapt to seasonal swimming, no matter the weather.

1. Winter Swimming in Heated Pools

  • Layer Up Before and After: During winter, even if you’re swimming in a heated pool, the cold outside can be a shock. Layering up with a warm robe, hat, and non-slip footwear keeps you cosy while heading in and out of the pool. After your swim, it’s essential to dry off and get warm as quickly as possible to avoid chills.
  • Warm-Up Properly: Muscles can feel stiffer in colder weather, so take extra time to warm up before you get in the pool. A bit of stretching or a brisk walk beforehand can help loosen your muscles, making it easier to start your swim.
  • Hydrate: Cold weather can often make us feel less thirsty, but swimming is still a workout, so make sure you stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle with you, as the indoor pool environment can sometimes be quite dry.
  • Consider the Right Swim Gear: Opt for a swim cap to retain some warmth, even if you’re indoors. Silicone caps are better insulators than other materials, keeping you warmer for longer. Goggles with anti-fog lenses are also helpful since indoor pools can create more humidity.

2. Preparing for Cold-Water Swimming

  • Invest in a Wetsuit: If you’re venturing into open water during colder months, a wetsuit is essential. It insulates your body by trapping a layer of water that warms up next to your skin. Different thicknesses are available, so choose one that suits the temperature of the water you’ll be swimming in.
  • Acclimatise Gradually: Cold-water swimming is invigorating but can be a shock to the system. Start with shorter swims and gradually build up your tolerance. Enter the water slowly, allowing your body to adjust, and make sure you never swim alone in cold water – safety is key.
  • Keep Warm Afterwards: Have a warm drink ready and change into dry, layered clothing immediately after exiting the water to help your body reheat.

3. Spring Swimming Tips

  • Prepare for Variable Conditions: Spring weather can be unpredictable, so bring layers to the pool or lake, and be ready for cool breezes even if the sun is shining. Water temperatures may still be low, so a thin wetsuit can help for open water.
  • Check for Pollen or Seasonal Allergens: Spring can bring high pollen counts, so if you have allergies, consider swimming in indoor pools or checking the pollen forecast before an outdoor swim.

4. Summer Swimming in Outdoor Pools or Natural Waters

  • Protect Against Sun Exposure: If you’re swimming outdoors in the summer, don’t forget to apply waterproof sunscreen before your swim to protect your skin from UV rays. For extended sessions, consider wearing a UV-protective rash guard.
  • Stay Hydrated: Swimming in the sun can be dehydrating, so make sure you drink plenty of water before and after your swim. It’s easy to forget about hydration when you’re in the water, but hot weather can quickly lead to dehydration.
  • Adjust to Warmer Waters: While summer swimming can be enjoyable, warm water can make your swim feel more intense. Keep an eye on your energy levels and pace yourself, especially if you’re swimming in a natural body of water where currents and conditions can vary.

5. Autumn Swimming Preparations

  • Be Aware of Lowering Temperatures: As the weather cools in autumn, water temperatures start to drop, especially in open water. A thermal swim cap or a light wetsuit can help keep you warm without restricting movement.
  • Watch for Changing Water Levels and Weather: Autumn can bring rain, which may affect water clarity, temperature, and currents in natural settings. Check local advisories, especially if you’re swimming in rivers, lakes, or the sea.

Adapting to each season’s swimming conditions helps you stay safe, comfortable, and make the most of your swim, no matter the weather. With the right preparation, swimming can be an enjoyable year-round activity, keeping you active, refreshed, and connected to the water all year long.

Transformative

Matthew is helping my son regain confidence as a swimmer after not enjoying swimming at school. Individual lessons are well worth the investment. He is a calm and encouraging teacher. I like the way he shows different techniques until he finds the right one for the child.

Matthew has been an amazing swim instructor

Matthew has been an amazing swim instructor for our autistic 5-year-old son. Our son is non-verbal, and Matthew has shown incredible patience, understanding, and skill in helping him learn to swim. He creates a calm, supportive environment and has built a wonderful connection with him. We are so proud of the progress our son has made and it’s largely thanks to Matthew’s dedication and encouragement. Seeing him grow in confidence and do so brilliantly in the water has been fantastic. We can’t recommend Matthew highly enough. Thank you !

Excellent Triathlon Swim Coaching with Hollie

I’ve been having swimming lessons with Hollie while training for a triathlon, as I wanted to improve my freestyle technique and feel more confident in the water. Hollie has been brilliant, she has a great eye for detail and was able to quickly pick up on areas I needed to work on, giving clear, practical feedback that made a real difference. Her coaching style is encouraging and very focused on technique, which has helped me understand what to improve and how to improve it. She has also given me specific training drills to work on outside of lessons, helping me build my fitness, improve my technique and make my training more structured. I’ve come away from the lessons feeling much more confident in my swimming and better prepared for my triathlon training. Highly recommend Hollie to anyone looking to improve their swimming, whether for fitness, technique or event training.

SwimExpert: Chester (Kam Sau Y) instructor

Chester (Kam Sau Y) has been a brilliant instructor. My son, Jack, and we as parents were extremely impressed during the trial session so much so that Jack immediately asked if Chester could be his swimming instructor. She was originally fully booked, and the only available slot was 5:30–6:00 pm on Sundays, which didn’t work for us. Despite this, she was incredibly kind and adjusted her schedule to start earlier so she could accommodate us. That alone shows her dedication and commitment. Jack has now completed his fifth lesson. He loves and keeps looking forward to his every session and we can already see a noticeable improvement in both his skills and his confidence in the water. We especially appreciate that Chester incorporates life‑saving techniques, such as what to do in an accidental fall into the water something particularly important given the recent news during the hot weather. It truly shows how much she cares about her students’ safety and overall development. What we value most about Chester is her focus on building strong foundations. Whenever Jack performs a technique incorrectly, she stops him immediately to correct it, ensuring he learns the right way from the start. This level of attention and professionalism makes a huge difference, as it prevents bad habits that would be harder to fix later on. So thank you Chester!

Mel B Swim Expert Basingstoke - got my son swimming in 6 sessions

Mel B has been fantastic in getting my 10 year old son to swim. I honestly could not believe my eyes, seeing the rapid improvement in my boy’s ability. We’d tried group lessons at the town pool when he was younger. I spent £400 there in total and he’d learnt nothing. So I thought I’d give 1-2-1 lessons a go. The change in my son’s attitude was instant. Before getting into the pool with Mel B, he was a boy who wouldn’t put his head back in the water. Within 15 minutes he was floating on his back! Yesterday, after his sixth session he swam his first length! Mel B teaches in a methodical way, making it fun too, so my boy doesn’t realise he’s being gently encouraged to do more and progress. Her attention and focus on their learning is 100 per cent. Thanks so much Mel! (Apollo Hotel, Basingstoke)
