Learn to Swim & Build Confidence in Local Adult Swimming Lessons

Published on 4 April 2023

Learning to swim as an adult can be nerve-wracking, overcoming fears and learning new skills is not easy and the challenge can be a big deterrent for many. But the good news is, If you’re reading this blog as someone that is looking to become a swimmer then you’re already making steps in the right direction!

Why learn to swim?

Swimming has a variety of benefits and is proven to have a great impact on physical and mental health. Notably, swimming is a non-impact full-body workout that helps to build strength and endurance while promoting a healthy heart and lungs.

Learning to swim can save your life indirectly by promoting a healthy lifestyle, but can also be a direct difference in drowning prevention. Having knowledge of water safety and the ability to swim will make you more confident and allow you to get out of situations that could otherwise be fatal.

Go at your own pace…

There is no rush – take it at your own pace. What works for someone else may not work for you, explore what is and isn’t working and adapt your methods to make you feel most comfortable.

Building confidence is key to swimming, learn to feel at ease in the water and the rest will all start to fit in place. Progress isn’t measured in one way, some might consider swimming to be a full freestyle/front crawl technique, but for others, it may just be getting their feet off of the ground.

Do what works for you and enjoy the process.

Go prepared…

There are a number of equipment and accessories that can help you to build confidence.

For most, water in their eyes or nose can hold them back. For a newcomer, placing your face into the water and blowing bubbles as a breathing exercise can be disconcerting as the unfamiliar feeling of the bubbles rising over your face can be a shock to start. Adding a noseclip and goggles could help you to relax, taking out the feeling of the water going into your nose or flowing over your eyes.

The equipment we would advise would be – two kickboards and a pool noodle, and a pair of goggles would be great too! If you need to buy these then why not check out theSwimmingShop or Simply Swim.

A pool noodle is a great tool for building confidence. You can hold onto it as you begin taking your first steps into the pool then as you grow in confidence you could wrap the noodle around your waist or chest to begin practising front crawl, or wrap your noodle around your back – across your shoulder blades and under your arms to begin practising backstroke.

Go to lessons…

Swimming can be self-taught, but progressing and building confidence in a programmed session with the support of an experienced instructor would always be advised by us. With the option of private 1-2-1 lessons or group classes, you can learn in an environment that best suits you.

Group lessons are great for building confidence with a group of like-minded individuals all looking to improve their swimming skills. If you’re feeling particularly nervous then the team atmosphere can create a really positive environment and help you to overcome your fears.

1-2-1 Lessons are great personalised lessons which are tailored to you and what you need at that time, helping to build confidence and make progress much quicker than in standard group lessons. With that in mind, they often come at a premium in comparison to group lessons.

No matter the lesson type you choose, you will make progress under the supervision of an instructor.

Go…

The first step is to go, the second step is to keep going! Push aside all doubts and fears and give yourself the best opportunity to learn, by being consistent and encouraging yourself. Booking regular lessons with a SwimExpert instructor will also motivate you further, giving you someone who is invested in your progress and helping you to become the swimmer you want to be.

Transformative

Matthew is helping my son regain confidence as a swimmer after not enjoying swimming at school. Individual lessons are well worth the investment. He is a calm and encouraging teacher. I like the way he shows different techniques until he finds the right one for the child.

Matthew has been an amazing swim instructor

Matthew has been an amazing swim instructor for our autistic 5-year-old son. Our son is non-verbal, and Matthew has shown incredible patience, understanding, and skill in helping him learn to swim. He creates a calm, supportive environment and has built a wonderful connection with him. We are so proud of the progress our son has made and it’s largely thanks to Matthew’s dedication and encouragement. Seeing him grow in confidence and do so brilliantly in the water has been fantastic. We can’t recommend Matthew highly enough. Thank you !

Excellent Triathlon Swim Coaching with Hollie

I’ve been having swimming lessons with Hollie while training for a triathlon, as I wanted to improve my freestyle technique and feel more confident in the water. Hollie has been brilliant, she has a great eye for detail and was able to quickly pick up on areas I needed to work on, giving clear, practical feedback that made a real difference. Her coaching style is encouraging and very focused on technique, which has helped me understand what to improve and how to improve it. She has also given me specific training drills to work on outside of lessons, helping me build my fitness, improve my technique and make my training more structured. I’ve come away from the lessons feeling much more confident in my swimming and better prepared for my triathlon training. Highly recommend Hollie to anyone looking to improve their swimming, whether for fitness, technique or event training.

Great 1:2:1 swimming Teacher

We could not be happier with Chester as a swimming teacher for our 5 yr old daughter. She had really helped grow her confidence in the water.

SwimExpert: Chester (Kam Sau Y) instructor

Chester (Kam Sau Y) has been a brilliant instructor. My son, Jack, and we as parents were extremely impressed during the trial session so much so that Jack immediately asked if Chester could be his swimming instructor. She was originally fully booked, and the only available slot was 5:30–6:00 pm on Sundays, which didn’t work for us. Despite this, she was incredibly kind and adjusted her schedule to start earlier so she could accommodate us. That alone shows her dedication and commitment. Jack has now completed his fifth lesson. He loves and keeps looking forward to his every session and we can already see a noticeable improvement in both his skills and his confidence in the water. We especially appreciate that Chester incorporates life‑saving techniques, such as what to do in an accidental fall into the water something particularly important given the recent news during the hot weather. It truly shows how much she cares about her students’ safety and overall development. What we value most about Chester is her focus on building strong foundations. Whenever Jack performs a technique incorrectly, she stops him immediately to correct it, ensuring he learns the right way from the start. This level of attention and professionalism makes a huge difference, as it prevents bad habits that would be harder to fix later on. So thank you Chester!

Mel B Swim Expert Basingstoke - got my son swimming in 6 sessions

Mel B has been fantastic in getting my 10 year old son to swim. I honestly could not believe my eyes, seeing the rapid improvement in my boy’s ability. We’d tried group lessons at the town pool when he was younger. I spent £400 there in total and he’d learnt nothing. So I thought I’d give 1-2-1 lessons a go. The change in my son’s attitude was instant. Before getting into the pool with Mel B, he was a boy who wouldn’t put his head back in the water. Within 15 minutes he was floating on his back! Yesterday, after his sixth session he swam his first length! Mel B teaches in a methodical way, making it fun too, so my boy doesn’t realise he’s being gently encouraged to do more and progress. Her attention and focus on their learning is 100 per cent. Thanks so much Mel! (Apollo Hotel, Basingstoke)
