Beyond Lessons: Fun Pool Games for Kids to Splash About In

Published on 17 July 2024

Swimming lessons are crucial for children to learn safety and develop their skills in the water, but it’s also important to balance these lessons with fun and games. Playing pool games not only makes swimming enjoyable but also helps kids build confidence and improve their swimming abilities in an engaging way. Here are some exciting pool games that your kids can splash about in, turning any swim time into a fun adventure.

1. Marco Polo

A timeless classic, Marco Polo is a game of tag played in the pool. One player is designated as “Marco” and must close their eyes and count to ten while the other players scatter around the pool. Marco then calls out “Marco!” and the other players must respond with “Polo!” Using the sound of their voices, Marco tries to locate and tag one of the players, who then becomes the new Marco. This game enhances spatial awareness and listening skills while keeping the kids active.

2. Sharks and Minnows

In this game, one player is chosen as the shark and the rest are minnows. The shark starts in the middle of the pool, and the minnows line up at one end. The shark calls out “Minnows, swim!” and the minnows must try to swim to the other side without being tagged by the shark. If tagged, they become sharks too. The game continues until only one minnow is left, who then becomes the new shark. Sharks and Minnows is great for improving speed and agility in the water.

3. Treasure Hunt

A pool treasure hunt is a fantastic way to make swimming exciting. Toss various pool toys, diving sticks, or coins into the water and have the kids dive to collect them. You can make it competitive by assigning different point values to each item and seeing who can gather the most points. This game encourages diving skills and underwater swimming, making it both fun and beneficial for young swimmers.

4. Noodle Jousting

Pool noodles are versatile toys that can be used for a variety of games. In noodle jousting, two players sit on inflatable pool floats or noodles and use another noodle to try to knock their opponent into the water. The one who stays on their float the longest wins. This game helps with balance and coordination, and it’s a lot of fun to watch and play.

5. Whirlpool

Gather a group of kids in a circular pool or the shallow end of a larger pool. Have them all start walking in the same direction around the edge. As they move faster, a whirlpool effect will form. After a few minutes, they can try to swim against the current they’ve created. This game is not only entertaining but also teaches kids about the physical effects of movement in water.

6. Relay Races

Set up a series of relay races for a fun, competitive activity. Create teams and set different tasks for each leg of the race, such as swimming with a noodle, performing a specific stroke, or retrieving a sinking toy. Relay races are fantastic for encouraging teamwork and practising different swimming techniques.

7. Pool Volleyball

Set up a net across the pool and use a beach ball for a friendly game of volleyball. This game can be played with as few as two players or as many as you like, making it flexible for any group size. Pool volleyball is excellent for improving hand-eye coordination and promoting social interaction.

8. Water Basketball

If your pool has a basketball hoop, this game is a must. Kids can play a modified game of basketball in the water, which can be less strenuous than on land due to the buoyancy of the water. This activity is perfect for developing coordination and teamwork.

Playing pool games not only keeps kids entertained but also helps them develop important swimming and social skills in a fun environment. Incorporate these games into your pool time to create memorable, splash-tastic experiences for your children.

Matthew is helping my son regain confidence as a swimmer after not enjoying swimming at school. Individual lessons are well worth the investment. He is a calm and encouraging teacher. I like the way he shows different techniques until he finds the right one for the child.

Matthew has been an amazing swim instructor

Matthew has been an amazing swim instructor for our autistic 5-year-old son. Our son is non-verbal, and Matthew has shown incredible patience, understanding, and skill in helping him learn to swim. He creates a calm, supportive environment and has built a wonderful connection with him. We are so proud of the progress our son has made and it’s largely thanks to Matthew’s dedication and encouragement. Seeing him grow in confidence and do so brilliantly in the water has been fantastic. We can’t recommend Matthew highly enough. Thank you !

Excellent Triathlon Swim Coaching with Hollie

I’ve been having swimming lessons with Hollie while training for a triathlon, as I wanted to improve my freestyle technique and feel more confident in the water. Hollie has been brilliant, she has a great eye for detail and was able to quickly pick up on areas I needed to work on, giving clear, practical feedback that made a real difference. Her coaching style is encouraging and very focused on technique, which has helped me understand what to improve and how to improve it. She has also given me specific training drills to work on outside of lessons, helping me build my fitness, improve my technique and make my training more structured. I’ve come away from the lessons feeling much more confident in my swimming and better prepared for my triathlon training. Highly recommend Hollie to anyone looking to improve their swimming, whether for fitness, technique or event training.

Great 1:2:1 swimming Teacher

We could not be happier with Chester as a swimming teacher for our 5 yr old daughter. She had really helped grow her confidence in the water.

SwimExpert: Chester (Kam Sau Y) instructor

Chester (Kam Sau Y) has been a brilliant instructor. My son, Jack, and we as parents were extremely impressed during the trial session so much so that Jack immediately asked if Chester could be his swimming instructor. She was originally fully booked, and the only available slot was 5:30–6:00 pm on Sundays, which didn’t work for us. Despite this, she was incredibly kind and adjusted her schedule to start earlier so she could accommodate us. That alone shows her dedication and commitment. Jack has now completed his fifth lesson. He loves and keeps looking forward to his every session and we can already see a noticeable improvement in both his skills and his confidence in the water. We especially appreciate that Chester incorporates life‑saving techniques, such as what to do in an accidental fall into the water something particularly important given the recent news during the hot weather. It truly shows how much she cares about her students’ safety and overall development. What we value most about Chester is her focus on building strong foundations. Whenever Jack performs a technique incorrectly, she stops him immediately to correct it, ensuring he learns the right way from the start. This level of attention and professionalism makes a huge difference, as it prevents bad habits that would be harder to fix later on. So thank you Chester!

Mel B Swim Expert Basingstoke - got my son swimming in 6 sessions

Mel B has been fantastic in getting my 10 year old son to swim. I honestly could not believe my eyes, seeing the rapid improvement in my boy’s ability. We’d tried group lessons at the town pool when he was younger. I spent £400 there in total and he’d learnt nothing. So I thought I’d give 1-2-1 lessons a go. The change in my son’s attitude was instant. Before getting into the pool with Mel B, he was a boy who wouldn’t put his head back in the water. Within 15 minutes he was floating on his back! Yesterday, after his sixth session he swam his first length! Mel B teaches in a methodical way, making it fun too, so my boy doesn’t realise he’s being gently encouraged to do more and progress. Her attention and focus on their learning is 100 per cent. Thanks so much Mel! (Apollo Hotel, Basingstoke)
