2025 Swim Trends: The Latest Techniques, Gear, and Tips for All Levels

Published on 8 January 2025

Staying informed on the latest swim trends can give you a unique edge, helping you to improve your performance, enhance enjoyment, and optimise training efficiency. Here’s what’s trending in the world of swimming for 2025.

1. Technique Trends: Precision Breathing and Streamlined Movement

This year, there’s a clear focus on refining breathing techniques for all swimmers, from those learning to float to competitive athletes. Swimmers are working on breath timing and control to maximise efficiency and minimise fatigue, with a renewed emphasis on bilateral breathing (alternating sides in freestyle). This technique not only improves lung capacity but also promotes balanced muscle use, reducing the risk of injury and helping swimmers achieve a symmetrical stroke.

Streamlined movement is another area seeing focused improvements. Swimmers at all levels are encouraged to prioritise body alignment and minimise drag by learning to engage the core effectively. Coaches are introducing innovative drills to reinforce proper body position, like dolphin kick variations and sculling drills that enhance swimmers’ understanding of body tension and flow. These subtle adjustments to movement can make a big difference in performance.

2. High-Tech Gear: Smart Goggles, Eco-Friendly Suits, and Wearables

Technology in swimming gear is advancing rapidly, and 2025 has some exciting new offerings. Smart goggles are at the forefront of this trend, now equipped with augmented reality (AR) to display real-time metrics like lap count, stroke rate, and split times directly in the swimmer’s line of vision. This tech is helping swimmers stay aware of their performance without breaking rhythm, allowing for smoother and more focused training sessions.

Environmentally conscious eco-friendly swimwear has also gained traction this year, with many brands introducing sustainable suits made from recycled ocean plastics and biodegradable materials. These suits offer the same hydrodynamic benefits and durability as traditional materials but with a reduced environmental impact, making them popular among swimmers who prioritise sustainability.

3. Innovative Training Techniques: HIIT and Dynamic Stretching for Swimmers

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) continues to make waves in swimming, but 2025 has seen a new twist on the method, with shorter, more intense intervals geared toward enhancing cardiovascular endurance and power. HIIT training for swimmers now incorporates both in-water sprints and out-of-water movements, such as resistance bands and bodyweight exercises that mimic swim strokes. These routines are designed to build both strength and speed, making them adaptable for all levels.

Dynamic stretching is also increasingly recommended before hitting the pool, replacing the static stretches of the past. These active movements help increase flexibility, warm up muscles, and enhance range of motion, which is particularly beneficial for key swimming muscles in the shoulders, hips, and legs. Movements like arm swings, lunges, and squats prepare swimmers for powerful strokes, helping to prevent injury and improve overall performance.

4. Mental Training and Visualisation Techniques

Swimming requires mental strength as much as physical prowess, and in 2025, mental training is becoming integral to top performance. Swimmers are increasingly using visualisation techniques to prepare for events and practise their form, picturing themselves executing perfect strokes, breathing patterns, and turns. This approach is backed by sports psychology, which shows that mental rehearsal can reduce anxiety and improve confidence before competitions.

Mindfulness and breathing exercises are also popular among swimmers, helping them to stay calm and focused, even in high-stress situations. These techniques are beneficial not only for competitions but also for anyone who swims for fitness and well-being, as they encourage a relaxed and balanced mindset that makes swimming more enjoyable and sustainable.

5. Sustainability in Swimming Pools

Sustainability in pool facilities has gained momentum, with more pools adopting saltwater and UV filtration systems as environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional chlorine treatments. These systems are easier on swimmers’ skin and hair and provide a more natural swimming experience. Saltwater pools, in particular, offer a gentler environment that reduces the “chlorine fatigue” often experienced in regular pools, making it appealing for frequent swimmers and those with sensitive skin.

Some swimming facilities are also introducing energy-efficient heating and water-saving technologies to reduce their environmental impact. By choosing sustainable facilities, swimmers can support greener practices and enjoy a more eco-friendly swim experience.

Transformative

Matthew is helping my son regain confidence as a swimmer after not enjoying swimming at school. Individual lessons are well worth the investment. He is a calm and encouraging teacher. I like the way he shows different techniques until he finds the right one for the child.

Matthew has been an amazing swim instructor

Matthew has been an amazing swim instructor for our autistic 5-year-old son. Our son is non-verbal, and Matthew has shown incredible patience, understanding, and skill in helping him learn to swim. He creates a calm, supportive environment and has built a wonderful connection with him. We are so proud of the progress our son has made and it’s largely thanks to Matthew’s dedication and encouragement. Seeing him grow in confidence and do so brilliantly in the water has been fantastic. We can’t recommend Matthew highly enough. Thank you !

Excellent Triathlon Swim Coaching with Hollie

I’ve been having swimming lessons with Hollie while training for a triathlon, as I wanted to improve my freestyle technique and feel more confident in the water. Hollie has been brilliant, she has a great eye for detail and was able to quickly pick up on areas I needed to work on, giving clear, practical feedback that made a real difference. Her coaching style is encouraging and very focused on technique, which has helped me understand what to improve and how to improve it. She has also given me specific training drills to work on outside of lessons, helping me build my fitness, improve my technique and make my training more structured. I’ve come away from the lessons feeling much more confident in my swimming and better prepared for my triathlon training. Highly recommend Hollie to anyone looking to improve their swimming, whether for fitness, technique or event training.

SwimExpert: Chester (Kam Sau Y) instructor

Chester (Kam Sau Y) has been a brilliant instructor. My son, Jack, and we as parents were extremely impressed during the trial session so much so that Jack immediately asked if Chester could be his swimming instructor. She was originally fully booked, and the only available slot was 5:30–6:00 pm on Sundays, which didn’t work for us. Despite this, she was incredibly kind and adjusted her schedule to start earlier so she could accommodate us. That alone shows her dedication and commitment. Jack has now completed his fifth lesson. He loves and keeps looking forward to his every session and we can already see a noticeable improvement in both his skills and his confidence in the water. We especially appreciate that Chester incorporates life‑saving techniques, such as what to do in an accidental fall into the water something particularly important given the recent news during the hot weather. It truly shows how much she cares about her students’ safety and overall development. What we value most about Chester is her focus on building strong foundations. Whenever Jack performs a technique incorrectly, she stops him immediately to correct it, ensuring he learns the right way from the start. This level of attention and professionalism makes a huge difference, as it prevents bad habits that would be harder to fix later on. So thank you Chester!

Mel B Swim Expert Basingstoke - got my son swimming in 6 sessions

Mel B has been fantastic in getting my 10 year old son to swim. I honestly could not believe my eyes, seeing the rapid improvement in my boy’s ability. We’d tried group lessons at the town pool when he was younger. I spent £400 there in total and he’d learnt nothing. So I thought I’d give 1-2-1 lessons a go. The change in my son’s attitude was instant. Before getting into the pool with Mel B, he was a boy who wouldn’t put his head back in the water. Within 15 minutes he was floating on his back! Yesterday, after his sixth session he swam his first length! Mel B teaches in a methodical way, making it fun too, so my boy doesn’t realise he’s being gently encouraged to do more and progress. Her attention and focus on their learning is 100 per cent. Thanks so much Mel! (Apollo Hotel, Basingstoke)
