When you swap running or cycling for swimming, your body’s built-in speed test stops working properly. You might feel like you are gliding fast, only to look at the clock and see a slow time. Other times, a swim that feels terrible turns out to be your fastest lap of the week.
This happens because your brain learned to measure hard work while living on land. On ground, exercise gives you clear signals. Every step sends a small shock through your feet and legs. You feel gravity pulling you down, and you see the ground moving quickly beneath you. Your brain uses these strong signals to tell you how fast you are going and how hard you are working.
In the water, those familiar signals disappear.
First: water floats your weight. Floating takes away the heavy stomping feeling in your joints. Without those hard bumps, your brain thinks the work is easier than it really is.
Second: water is heavy and thick. Pushing through water is much harder than pushing through air. To swim twice as fast, you have to push eight times harder. If you try twenty percent harder, you might only move a tiny bit faster. Most of your extra energy just gets lost pushing against the water. This makes you feel stuck or slow, even when your muscles are working as hard as possible.
Third: swimming covers your ears and hides your view. Looking at a line on the bottom of the pool does not help you judge speed. Floating through calm water does not feel the same as feeling the wind rush past your face when you run.
Because your brain gets these confusing signals, you cannot trust your feelings to guess your swimming speed. Instead of guessing by feel, rely on simple tools like the pool clock, counting your strokes, or following a set training plan to stay on pace.
Overcoming these tricky water signals is much easier with tailored guidance. At SwimExpert, our experienced instructors work with you individually in dedicated private lessons to break down your stroke mechanics and teach you how to read your pacing accurately. Whether you want to build stamina, improve your technique, or hit specific fitness milestones, our tailored one-to-one swimming instruction gives you the exact tools and feedback needed to reach your personal goals.
